Dane is the Director of Spiritual Formation for Sage Hill Counseling. He also co-facilitates multiple Men's groups each week, leads pre-marital counseling, and leads Module 3 of Sage Hill Training.

Dane has practiced as a spiritual guide and mentor for more than 30 years. His work with individuals and groups includes spiritual direction, vocational discernment process, and retreat leadership. Dane’s practice is rooted in the traditional understanding of Spiritual Direction as “holy listening,” a context in which God’s presence directs our conversation and leads us to live an “undivided life” with ourselves, others and God.

Dane also has more than 15 years’ experience teaching and consulting the StrengthsFinder Inventory for students, businesses, and individuals.

Originally, Elkhart, Indiana. Grew up in St. Louis, Missouri

Do you have pets?
I have a Terrier-Sheltie mix rescue dog: Chula (Spanish for “cutie”) – she has human eyes.

About Your Practice
How did you get into this profession?
I began my career as a university chaplain; providing spiritual & relational guidance, facilitating retreats, & leadership development.

Who has influenced your work?
Authors: Fredrick Buechner; Henri Nouwen; Gerald May; Parker Palmer Poets: Wendell Berry; Mary Oliver; David Whyte; John O'Donohue

How does your faith play itself out in your work?
There is, for me in every conversation some inkling of our deeper inner life seeking to find its way out. To say it another way, I am never having a conversation in which I believe the Spirit is not integrally involved in guiding and directing.

What is your favorite type of music and your favorite singer/band?
I like a lot of genres, but always come back to Jazz. My go-to artist is Dave Brubeck

Masterpiece Theater on BBC

What's your favorite book or author?
No question: Let Your Life Speak, by Parker Palmer

What is your favorite sport/physical activity?
I'm an avid hiker - though I am more drawn to the idea of "sauntering".

What's your favorite place to visit?
My favorite place is actually in my own backyard!

What was your first job?
I ran the Rifle Range in the Arcade at Six Flags Over Mid-America

What is your most treasured possession?
A first-edition of Edgar Rice Burroughs, given to my grandmother on her 18th birthday. It was given to my father on his 18th, then to me, and I have given it to my daughter.

If you have friends coming over, what would you cook?
A great roast, sweet potatoes, a huge salad, a lovely loaf of homemade bread, and nice bottle of wine

What pastimes or hobbies do you enjoy?
Hiking, reading, film, travel, fly fishing, gardening

Other than your current home, if you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be?
I'd be glad to live in a cottage on the Oregon coast!
