In the midst of life’s tragedies and needs is the dreamer. We desperately need people who can see a world in need and picture possibilities to meet needs. They have the potential to create a place where hope remains alive, faith has a purpose, and love becomes a power. However, dreamers only add to life when they risk action and, thus, subsequently risk failure. 

“Watch out for the trap of empty space between where you are and where you dream of going.”

If the people who have potential to add to life take action, their risks move them from concept to action, from ideal to reality. The risk taker—the one who invests their heart’s call and energy on a potential failure—becomes a dreamer of another name; dreamers can then be called entrepreneurs, servant-leaders, or legacy builders. They become people of vision who have the courage to take action. They see, then think, then act. For the sake of success, they risk failure. Frankly, they would rather suffer in the full light of failure than live in the shadows of the regret of having never discovered.

The greatest risk to the dreamer, however, is that the dreamer can get lost in the future. If the dreamer spends the day in effort towards fulfillment of the dream, they have succeeded. But if the dreamer spends the end of that day comparing the day itself to the future of the dream, they are at risk of a despair that can kill the dream. They fall into the space between the day’s efforts and the image of the dream’s completion. If the dreamer compares the reality of the day to the greater vision of the future, they may fall into the trap of seeing only the void of the dream, or the future not realized. The true dreamer has to continue in daily living the dream. The great future of the dream’s completion is lived in the dirt of the days in which one foot is placed in front of the other.

Of course the future is not realized. The future fully realized is death and the dreams we dream will never match the magnificence of our imaginations. Only effort and wisdom in the courage of dreaming, while living in the dirt, will make us successful. Watch out for the trap of empty space between where you are and where you dream of going.
